Wire Laying Machine: New Member of BioMat Team

After a long procedure, BioMat finally got its own Wire laying machine so-called Tailored Fibre Placement machine. The machine will be a part of the Large Scale Construction Robotics Laboratory in Vaiblingen, established under IntCDC cluster of excellence in 2019. The machine will be primarily used for laying of natural continuous fibers used as a reinforcement for Biocomposites. BioMat through this machine will be able to further explore the optimization of biocomposite fiber layout as well as an automatization and digitalization of the fabrication process. Due to the multifunctionality of the machine, BioMat researchers will investigate the possibilities of embedded functions. Smart biocomposites will be able to accommodate soft actuators, sensors, additional reinforcements, fire stops, thermo insulations, etc. The goal is to reach a more sustainable building industry through on-site automatization and digital fabrication of natural fibres.

Lecture at grow.build.repeat. symposium

Prof. Dahy gives a lecture at grow.build.repeat. symposium organized by KIT Karlsruhe and Change Labs. The symposium is dedicated to the question of how we can use our natural resources responsibly in times of climate change and an increasingly glaring shortage of resources and pollution of our environment by non-biodegradable and artificially manipulated materials.

Speakers: Martin Rauch, Prof. Dr. Marie-Pierre Laborie, Dr. Henk Jonkers, Dr. Alireza Javadian, Werner Schmidt, Prof. Eike Roswag-Klinge, Andrea Klinge, Natascha Hempel, Jun. Prof. Dr. Hanaa Dahy, Diana Drewes and Dr. Michael Sailer.

Lecture DGNB

On the 18th of November Prof. Dahy gave a lecture at a prestige workshop on “Timber Construction/Bioeconomy” organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen: DGNB eV.

Interlock

“Interlock” proposes a modular biocomposite structure with a simple interlocking joint as the main assembly aspect, emphasizing the reusability of such modules, and the ease of erecting the structure with minimal means.
This project is meant as an investigative method towards alternative building methods and materials, being part of the ongoing BIOMAT research into natural, recyclable, low-cost, CO2-neutral materials. It is supposed to devise a design and building strategy that encompasses the principles of “cradle to cradle” life cycles in the built environment, proposing a holistic approach to bio-inspired design, accentuating the main advantages of these alternative methods in contrast to traditional building processes.

ZKM lecture

The ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe), which is a renowned well-known culture and arts center in Germany had held the Karlsruher Forum 2020 on Wednesday the 14th of October 2020 with the topic of “New materials for a new world for our future” (Bioal¬che¬mie – unsere Zukunft? Neue Materia¬lien für eine neue Welt) . Prof. Hanaa Dahy has held an introductory lecture in this event with the title: Gold Straw replaces Plastic!

Radio interview (Horads 88,6)

This radio interview discussed opportunities towards future sustainable architecture both in Germany and globally and how BioMat Department at ITKE is supporting that along with all partners and colleagues of the University of Stuttgart and in Stuttgart region.
The interview was moderated by Mr. Robin Christoph Knapp who interviewed Prof. Hanaa Dahy and the discussion covered many interesting developments and ideas linked with sustainability in the building sector and the adaptation of similar developments from other industrial fields including electronics, automotive, textile & material engineering, aircraft design engineering, and others.
